If you go back to last June and pick up DC Rebirth it is a story about Wally West telling the DC Universe that something supremely powerful has taken 10 years away from their timeline. He didn't know what it was but he was scared.
In that same issue Batman learns that their have been 3 different jokers that he has been fighting all these years and he also finds a button. A smiley face button that we all know belongs to the Watchmans' Comedian but he has no idea what it is or how it got into the bat cave. This gave us the idea that perhaps Dr. Manhattan has somehow, for reasons unknown, messed with time,
Spoilers ahead from here on out!!
Batman #21: The Button Part I
This entire issue takes place over 2 minutes. Batman is in the bat cave and calls Flash to come by and discuss the Button because when Bats put it down next to Psycho Pirates mask it reacted with it and he had a vision of Thomas Wayne as Flashpoint Batman. After that vision Reverse Flash shows up and kicks Batman's ass for exactly 2 minutes while Bats is waiting for Flash to show up.
After Reverse Flash defeats Batman he picks up the button and he begins to have a vision and disintegrates right there in the batcave to dust and bones, the entire time screaming GOD!!!
Flash finally shows up late as usual and the book ends.
Flash #21: The Button Part II
This is a great little issue that showcases the detective nature and bond that Batman and the Flash share with one another. The love they have for detective work.
Barry finds a radiation signature on Reverse Flash and the button that resembles radiation from his speedforce which is unusual because Reverse Flash uses a different speed force that emits a different radiation so Barry is starting to believe that maybe he had something to do with this.
He discusses some of his findings with Bruce and they begin to question how much time Reverse Flash had messed with prior and during the encounter with Batman and what his vision could have been.
Barry decides that he is going to attempt to travel through time and locate the radiation signature that he found on the button and Reverse Flash by using the cosmic treadmill. At the last minute Batman says that he is going with him and they embark on their journey only to have it cut short when the treadmill crashes and breaks in the batcave. but not Bruces batcave. Thomas Wayne's batcave.
Batman #22: The Button pt. 3
This is a Thomas Wayne book all the way and it is amazing!! Thomas Wayne narrates the book very briefly describing Flashpoint and how Barry was supposed to fix the timeline but for some reason he hasn't. He should be gone, but he isn't and Aquaman and Wonder Woman want him dead but that really means nothing for this story.
Thomas is alone in his cave awaiting the fight between he and the soldiers of Aquaman and Wonder Woman when all of a sudden Flash and Batman arrive!!! Bruce and Thomas Wanye together as Batmen!!! Its freaking epic!! As they battle side by side to defeat Arthur and Diana's men Barry is rebuilding the cosmic treadmill. They realize that this Flashpoint shouldn't even exist but it seems to be held in place by something. Someone wants them to be there for some reason.
Bruce begs his dad to get on the treadmill and go back with them but he refuses and tells Bruce that he loves him and Not to be Batman. Instead find happiness that he was never able to find and the treadmill takes off.
While in the speed force they find what they came to find. Thawne (reverse flash) with the button right before he dies in the cave. Barry warns him that if he keeps going that he is going to die and Thawne replies that he knows who is behind the power of the button and that they have never faced anyone like him.
Flash #22: The Button Part Four
The conclusion of the button story arc definitely did not disappoint but it did leave you with many unanswered questions and a long time to wait for answers. I have so many mixed emotions about this issue because it has a major reveal that you kind of already knew and at the same time giving you a peak into what is to come but not until November!!!!!
This arc feels like act two of three. Act one was the Rebirth event. Then the Button and finally the big reveal in this book, The Doomsday Clock.
Dr. Manhattan has the button and presumably destroyed Reverse Flash. Batman is pondering still fighting crime because of his interaction with his dad and somehow Superman is going to be involved!!
