This book opens with a very typical, fun, Jessica Drew chasing down a bad guy scene. In this case Blizzard is the baddy that is going to end up on the wrong end of a Spider-woman upper cut. She chases him through the city, spits out some excellent "cold/snow" puns and handles him fairly easily. Afterward, she goes home where she expects her dear Roger to be watching her baby and finds her friend Ben there instead.
So the question is where is Roger? Why did he just bail on Jess and leave the baby with Ben? We know that Roger is a low level street crime fighter and goes by the name porcupine but when he is being a superhero he is usually by Jessica's side as a helper, not out on his own.
Turns out that Roger used to be a small time villain and is under contract with the Hobgoblin who is basically portrayed as a crime boss. Roderick Kingsley is the Hobgoblin and started a business where he re purposes the code names, suits, and gear of dead or retired bad guys and contracts them out to whomever is willing to pay. Kingsley refers to these people as franchisees.
Well, Roger was one of them and he went to seek out the Hobgoblin to tell him that he is no longer a bad guy and if he could break contract and buy the suit outright so he can continue to fight crime as a good guy with Spider Woman. Hobgoblin did not take kindly to his request. He and his thugs beat Roger, take his suit and kill him. His body is thrown into the river from a pumpkin grenade blast and we do not see him again.
After sometime, Jessica is beginning to become very worried about Roger and his whereabouts. After some detective work and some help from Carol Danvers, Jessica finds out that the last place Roger visited was Hobgoblins bar.
Jessica figures out the Hobgoblins little business venture because she is attacked by the porcupine while going searching for Roger. Some new criminal bought the porcupines old contract and is now in possession of the suit and after being beat up by Jessica she tells her Hobgoblins scheme.
Jessica is now out to get the Hobgoblin!!! En Route to his hideout she is ambushed by several of his goons and is clearing over matched when someone in a hoodie steps in and helps her defeat them. The mysterious man is in fact Roger. Not dead!!! He tells her that the only reason he isn't dead is because he was wearing some alien tech shirt that Carol gave Jessica while she was pregnant (see SW #1-3). It saved him from the blast and he faked his death to keep Jessica and her child out of the mess and he has been trailing her ever since.
Then what we all wanted to see since the beginning of this run occurs!!!!! Jessica leans in and kisses Roger! He had admittedly fallen in love with her to Ben in previous issues and never had the nerve to tell her. Recently, Jessica had heard from two different individuals, one Rogers ex wife, that he had a thing for her, so to finally see them kiss was really nice.
However, we all know how Goblins are at ruining relationships! Hobgoblins swoops in and grabs Roger with a grappling hook and flies off laughing!!
We end the book with Jess doing everything she can to save Roger against Hobgoblin and his thugs. She does an amazing job kicking butt and at the end just when you think she is in some trouble, Captain Marvel comes and finishes off everyone for her. I didn't really like that ending because it was all Jess the entire time. To let Carol come in and save the day at the very end was kinda lame. But she gave Jess and Roger some "alone" time and they walk away together.
I have heard rumors that Spider Woman might be getting the ax and that makes me sad. This has been one of my favorite books lately and I will be very sad to see her go. But I can see her retiring with her son and Roger and living happily ever after and I am happy for her.
