The title of this arc implies some type of vengeance by Bane on both Batman and Catwoman, who broke Bane's back in I am suicide.
Issue #16- I am Bane
Wow, the opening pages of this book are absolutely amazing in my opinion. I love when a book picks up directly after another and this arc does just that. Psycho Pirate is in his cell in Arkham and Batman and Dr. Arkham are observing him when a guard turn on both of them and attempt to kill them both. Luckily Bronze tiger was there to help and take down the guard.
The reason Tiger was there was because he wanted to use Psycho Pirate to take away the pain of Venom withdrawals, the same reason that Bane wants him back. The guard was tasked with getting Bane back as well.
We then move from Arkham to non other than Bat Burger! Yep.. a Batman themed burger joint with jokerized fries and everything! I actually thought it was a joke at first but it wasn't. Here we see that Bruce, Dick, Jason, Damian, and Duke have a meeting. Bruce tells them that Bane is coming and that he has 5 days to use the Pirate to cure Gotham Girl before he can break his mask which gives the him his powers. He doesn't want anyone to get hurt so he tells the guys to leave town and do not come back for 5 days.
Even though it sounds straight foward, these pages are outstanding. The guys are acting like absolute children at the burger joint! They are hitting each other like brothers, throwing and stealing each others food, making fun of each others looks, its just perfect to see these very serious mini batboys act like the kids they are.
The Big Surprise!!!!!!!
We leave Bat-Burger and go to Wayne Manor where Bruce and Alfred are carrying Gotham Girl to the cave to take her to her first treatment. When they get to the cave they see three bodies dressed up as Robin,Nightwing, and the red Hood hanging from nooses with the words I AM BANE written across their chests!
Issue #17: I am Bane pt. 2
We open up with Bronze Tiger on his bed in a hotel seeming going through venom withdrawals. In the background is a sports radio show describing a local footballer's play as a disaster. A knock at the door and when Tiger answers he get shot in the gut and collapses.
We then move to Batman meeting Superman in his fortress of solitude. He has placed Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin into some kind of chambers that are keeping them alive and tells Supes that for the next 4 days it is his job to keep them alive while he takes care of Bane and Psycho Pirate.
Under disguise of Dr. Arkham, Alfred sneaks Gotham girl into Psycho Pirates cell for her treatment where he places his mask on him and instructs Gotham Girl to be brave.
Atop the Arkham Asylum clock tower Batman sees Bane across from him on the rooftop of a nearby building. Bane lights a flare to show Bats that he has captured Catwoman, Duke, Gordan and Bronze Tiger.
Book #18: I am Bane pt. 3
Bane gives Batman an ultimatum. Ill give you Catwoman, Gordon, Bronze Tiger and Duke for Psycho Pirate. Bats says, No!
Bane and Bats fight. Actually, Bane just beats the Hell out of Bats. Which was just a distraction that you could see coming a mile away because Bat's wasn't fighting back. Catwoman got caught by Bane on purpose and set everyone free and took down Banes men.
We also get some cool flashbacks of Banes childhood. He lost his mother in a similar way to Bruce and shows their situations side by side. We see that the environment you are brought up in is what molds you into the person you are going to become. Bruce was loved wanted justice. Bane was not and became a monster.
The book ends by Batman luring Bane into Arkham Asylum.
Book #19: I am Bane pt. 4
This issue is awesome!!! King and Finch are killing it in my opinion. Arc after arc is compelling with good villains and every book leaves you wanting more.
Here we pick up right where we left off. Batman just let Bane beat the snot out of him as a distraction for Catwoman to set the captured Bat Family free and Bats lures Bane into Arkham Asylum.
As a last ditch effort to by himself some time, a beaten Batman enters the Asylum and releases the inmates so that they can distract Bane when he enters. The entire issue is Bane encountering Batman baddies and having to beat them up to get past them and ultimate to Batman. We see so many villains, its awesome. We see Two Face, Riddler, Mad Hatter, Solomon Grundy, Scarecrow, Hush, Calendar Man, Man Bat, and many more. Each page is a different bad guy trying to slow down Bane but he Venoms up keep going.
He explains that he was using the Pirate to help him get off the Venom. All was working well until Batman broke his back and stole the pirate from him.
After Bane gets through all the bad guys, he finally makes it to Batman. Before they fight the book ends. I can't wait to see the outcome!
Book #20: I am Bane pt. 5
Good ending to a very good arc!! Its a little predictable but it ends exactly the way you want it to. With Batman beating Bane in a one on one battle! This arc and this issue specifically deals with the ever present realism of Batman's mortality and that his days are numbered. The artwork is great and the story is very strong! Go give it a read.
