Kong Skull Island, directed by rookie Jordan Vogt-Roberts, is the next installment in the King Kong franchise and is interesting and different to say the least. The film stars heavy hitters such as Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson, John Goodman and John C. Reily and manages to give all these actors very little to do. The film starts out with Nixon pulling the troops out of Vietnam after the Paris Peace Talks and Sam Jackson’s squad is pulled into doing one more assignment for John Goodman’s character Bill Randa, who for years has been trying to find beasts and creatures on earth. Ultimately the crew goes onto the dreaded Skull Island with Tom Hiddleston who plays generic hero man and Brie Larson who portrays girl with camera, as they all get stranded after a confrontation with Kong.
All in all, I think Kong Skull Island is an empty shell of a movie that would be better to watch on YouTube through a series of short action scenes. But, if you're a person who doesn’t care about developing characters or compelling story this may be the movie for you. For me personally, when I think back to the original King Kong and remember the moving moments on top of the Empire State Building and is packed with great characters like Ann Darrow and Carl Denham this movie just winds up being a disappointment. So, I’m giving Kong Skull Island a 3/10.
