The Magnificent Seven (2016) is director Antonio Fuqua's re-imagining of John Struges "The Magnificent Seven (1960)." The Struges film is also a re-imagined version of the award winning Japanese film from Akita Kurosawa "Seven Samurai (1954)." What's the difference between remake and re-imagining? A remake sticks pretty close to original film. A re-imagining is a film that incorporates the basic premise of the original.

The Magnificent Seven takes place post Civil War around 1879 in Rose Creek. A small farming town who has fallen under control of a ruthless Industrialist named Bartholomew Boque (Peter Sarsgaard). With the small town in desperate need of help, Emma Cullen (Hanley Bennett) and her friend Teddy Q (Luke Grimes) set out to hire some guns. Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), a warrant Officer, agrees to help Emma Cullen and the journey begins.

The formation of the of members of The Magnificent Seven was a creative genius for Antonio Fuqua. All the characters are different in their personalities, age , look and background. Each with a different skill set. Chisolm recruits Joshua Farady (Chris Pratt) who is a drifter gambler who loves to drink. Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke) is a sharp shooter who is haunted by his actions in the civil war. Goodnight is accompanied by an Asian Knife Expert named Billy Rocks (Lee Byung-Hun). An Outlaw Mexican Gunslinger Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo). The last two members that round out this bunch of misfits is Jack Horne (Christopher D'Onofrio),expert tacker, and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier), comahe warrior.
As the story progresses there a slight lack of character development. Leaving wanting more for certain characters. Well timed comic relief between the Seven. There's plenty of action to keep you entertained. The one notable difference between this film and the 1960's film was there really wasn't an emotional feeling towards the people in the town. But in the end this motley crew defends the town of Rose Creek not for money but for the pursuit of life, liberty and the American way.

The Magnificent Seven was one of the best films we saw in 2016. I would recommend watching the original 1st before seeing this film. Make sure you check out Episode 2 were we do a full review with spoilers.
